Fairey Aviation started making experimental folding boats at their Hayes Manufacturing plant, Heathrow in the early 1950's. The cause or requirement is not understood, but portable folding craft made their appearance during WW11 and operated with success as candle stein craft. Photos of historical craft are exhibited.
In the photos you can see these various craft, but the 1950's hot moulded 'Pixie' went into production and was supplied with sails as well. The instructions for rigging and sailing were printed on the sails.
The two halves were fixed together with clips using a rubber seal for the join, which was 100% water tight. The hot moulding process made a strong, very light portable canoe.
Not may Pixies have survived, but they were marketed by Gorages the famous London Store for a while, as a family holiday boat.
Slight interest was taken for 'Polar work' on the icepack, as they could be used as a sledge and afloat if required.
Summary
A rare opportunity to purchase a small piece of marine Fairey history and also a usable family canoe.
