HistoryA Government tender was issued for replacement ships lifeboats, Fairey Marine submitted with their famous hot moulded hull technique. This lifeboat hull weighed only 800lbs, constructed of seven veneers and was immensely strong for its weight.
Testing of the submitted hulls was performed by a drop test loaded with sand bags to represent a distressed ships launch. This Fairey Hull survived the drop test with superficial damage and was then rowed around the test basin by a merchant navy crew. It was the only survivor of the drop test to be rowable afterwards. Various financial factors deemed the adoption of the Fairey version unviable, one of which was the reliance on a single manufacturer.
This Hull was then built into a motor sailor with 1150 lbs cast iron keel for stability.
The initial Bermudian designed rig was enlarged to give better performance at 260 sq.ft. and the Fairey Fisherman was a very practical all round Motor Sailor very suitable for family cruising and fun. Off the wind performance is adequate and up wind not great, but she is a motorsailer dragging a large 18" X 11" propeller and the sails steady her whilst motor sailing. Under power a steady cruising speed of 7.5 to 8 knots is available.
InteriorOne of the main outstanding features is the 6ft standing headroom, quite remarkable for such a length of boat, together with the commodious cabin. This cabin has plenty of room for living aboard & stowage. Barometer & Clock
The Galley is very generous on the stb side, plus a U-shaped seating/dinning table, which converts into a double berth. Fridge cool box. Ample lockers. Hob, oven & Grill stainless Steel cooker. Galley Sink.
The heads compartment is large & spacious with sink.
Up forward are two large V-berths. Ample stowage underneath.
All cushions have been replaced by the current owners.
MachineryThe world famous four cylinder Perkins 4108 of 50HP drives a shaft via a reduction Borg Warner gearbox. This is the later model and has only estimated 600 hrs use, the engine has been professionally maintained every season. Diesel Fuel 80 galls.(340 litres).
The Batteries were new for the 2015 season and the electrics have isolating switches and panel
ExteriorSolid Teak deck gives her a truely nautical flavour, with varnished rail. Winches are by Lewmar, the original tuffnal design. The Bermudian mast maybe lowered using the deck stepped tabernackle, a very easy job with the anchoring winch to raise. When in the inland water ways this is an important feature. The forstay has a roller jib, so motor sailing is an easy performace.

SummaryShe comes with a 2013 survey and was fully refurbished to a high standard in the late 1980's, by classic boat builder David Still.
The current owners have kept a steady programme of maintenance, new standing rigging 2015, propeller pitched & balanced by Hamble Propellers 2015, full exterior re-paint & antifouling.
The beauty of the Fisherman is the cosy circular seating area at the stern, which gives a wonderful entertaining atmosphere, the boom also maybe raised to give a large sun bathing deck area.
She is extremely seaworthy and Fisherman have always been most popular for coastal cruising and popping into the canal systems of Europe.
